Rattle My Bones 2009 Rally Report
From Kent Aldrich

Kent Aldrich explains it all for you. An explosion of glass and chrome late on Saturday marked the end of the third day of the 2009 Rattle My Bones Scooter Rally this last August. One of the coordinators, while fooling around on the gymkana equipment following that event, found himself suddenly overtaken by a strong gust of gravity. After being seen to by an ex-navy medic and a nurse, both of whom happened to be among the 235 rally participants, it was off to the hospital for Jon B to have his arm seen to properly.

Aside from Jon's sudden brush with the earth and the irate bicyclist who had, earlier, punched Lora M. as she escorted the Saturday Big Ride, the four day event went off nicely.

Brief rain showers cooled things down just before Thursday evening's scavenger hunt started the rally off. And though the Minnesota State Patrol questioned one of the hunt teams about why so many scooterists were buzzing around the grounds of the State Capitol, they were unable to find anything illegal about the activity and so left the bulk of us unmolested.

Friday fielded five fine rides; The daytime Historic Sites Tour is turning into a perennial favorite as it takes riders on a tour of (you guessed it) some of the area's historic sites. The evening's Vintage, Geared, Automatic and Virgin rides each took different tracks across Minneapolis, starting at Bob Hedstrom's Scooterville, and eventually winding up at a local club for beer, brats and bands (a shot out here to the monster ska stylings of the horn-heavy group, Umbrella Bed).

Saturday, after a breakfast at the Square Peg Diner, everyone took off on a 70 mile exploration of the Twin Cities and it's suburbs. Ending at Blue Cat Motors, where the gymkana and Jon's wreck were staged, we ate gyros, drank a bit and headed home as another light rain began to fall.

Sunday brought breakfast followed by the Rally Raffle and a relaxed Parkway Ride. We ended at a pub which served up fish and chips (and one's favorite libation) and closed out the 2009 Rattle My Bones Scooter Rally.

In August of 2010 (the 19th through 22nd, go to rattlemybones.com) we will be rallying once more and trying, again, to land those post-event jumps.

Jon is doing fine and Lora seems to have taken her hit in stride.
